An abaya is a loose, fuss-free garment worn over clothing, resembling a robe-like dress. Also called an abaya dress, it is typically black in colour and can either be a square shaped cloth draped over the shoulders or a long kaftan dress. Often worn in the Middle East, abayas for women represent Islamic values of modesty.
Originally worn for it’s long, loose silhouette that provided protection against the harsh sun and sand of the desert, with the introduction of Islam to the world, these long dresses for women were adopted to symbolise modesty and faith. Abayas were introduced in Saudi Arabia around 80 years ago by the Bedouin women, who typically wear black abayas with heavy golden embroidery on the front and sleeves. Saudi abayas are generally black in colour, the preferred garment of choice for Saudi women.
Today, an abaya is a point of cultural pride for many Middle Eastern countries, and an outlet of self expression that allows women to retain their modesty. With the passage of time many designers have started experimenting with the abaya dress, and now a plethora of options are available for women to choose from, ranging from colours, fabrics, cut and embellishments. Abayas online provide all these options and more for women to shop from the comfort of their home.
Since the 2010s many luxury brands have launched collections of brightly coloured, patterned and embroidered abayas. This reflected a shift in the concept of luxury abayas, which have only become more of a staple in the fashion landscape. AMPM’s abayas deliver the everyday luxury that is at the core of our brand philosophy, with luxe fabrics, rich colours and clean but thoughtful silhouettes.
With the intervention of fashion, the abaya dress has evolved into many different types, each catering to a different purpose. Here are a few of the different types of abayas for women:
Closed abayas are the oldest form of this garment, a long singular piece of cloth that drapes from the shoulder to the feet with no opening in the front. These abayas allow women to wear whatever they want underneath, as it will not be seen. Perfect for those days when you’re just not in the mood to put together a whole outfit.
As the name suggests, open abayas split open in the front, resembling a long jacket or robe. Most abayas online are of this variety, as it allows for greater styling opportunities and lets women show off their long dresses or outfits underneath. Generally anything worn underneath the open abaya is also supposed to adhere to the standards of modesty.
A relatively recent variation of the open abaya, the kimono abaya is inspired by the cultural Japanese garment, featuring wide sleeves and a sash that can be tied at the waist to act as a belt. Fashionable and modern, this abaya dress provides a stylish edge to comfortable everyday wear.
This variant of the abaya is all flair, perfect for a dinner party or formal soiree. In the design of either an open or closed abaya, it has - as the name suggests - layers of cloth to provide a ruffled look that adds dimension and texture to the outfit
These abayas for women are the height of extravagance. Colourful, beaded, embroidered, adorned with lacework and glittering sequins and made of luxurious fabrics such as satin and silk, the Dubai abaya sits firmly in the category of luxury abayas. Wear these abayas to a formal function or special events.
While the black abaya was the norm for the longest time, and is still preferred by many women around the world, abayas today come in a staggering variety of shades. Ranging from blues, greens, pinks, whites to purple abayas, anything goes nowadays. The black abaya represents purity and modesty in Islam, women today exercise agency in their choices and many opt to wear colourful abayas that fulfil their need for self expression.
AMPM’s luxury abayas are available in a range of rich, deep colours such as our signature black and white, maroon, pastel blue, golden yellow, leaf green, navy, royal purple and more. Fluid prints and clever colour blocking in complementing colours add a sense of elegance.
Considering that the abaya dress is predominantly worn in Middle Eastern countries that have high temperatures, lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton, georgette, chiffon, crepe and linen abayas make the perfect choice to bear the heat. However abayas for women are available in a multitude of fabrics such as satin, silk, wool, tweed, and nida - a blend of polyester and nylon fibres that is cooling in nature.
AMPM’s abayas are made from carefully picked materials that make you feel effortlessly elegant. Fabrics such as thick wool, chanderi (cotton silk), linen, rose silk, silk blends, linen, linen silk, pure crepe and organza satin make for stylish yet comfortable abayas.
